The behaviour of the Slider beneath the surface is incredibly chaotic – completely unpredictable. This unusual movement makes the lure highly attractive to any predator.
The Slider is usually retrieved using strong rod jerks combined with constant fast reeling – the rod jerks should be quite sharp and quick. Before you actually start fishing, try a few casts in clear water to observe how the Slider moves, so you can later execute and time everything correctly.
Between individual twitches, you must not allow slack in the line – it’s important to keep it tight so you can react instantly to a strike, but also because the Slider’s sharp side-to-side darts can cause it to tangle, and it’s up to you to prevent that.
The choice of retrieve style is very important. For example, when the water temperature is only around 2–5°C, you’ll achieve the best results with a slow retrieve, pausing for several seconds between twitches, and even the twitches themselves should be gentler. The sinking Slider is the right choice for this style, as it produces subtle movements while sinking that attract predators. When the water temperature is higher, the retrieve speed should be increased. The Slider is also surprisingly effective for trolling in shallow waters – keep it 10–30 metres behind the boat and twitch it as much as possible.
